Winning a Golden Globe for his portrayal of 19th century frontiersman Hugh Glass on Sunday night, Leonardo DiCaprio showed the world his latest movie, The Revenant, is going to be huge.
On the day it was released, 20th Century Fox launched 200miles.com, a virtual reality site that allows users to feel like they are walking in Glass’ footsteps throughout the movie. The site marks various important points of the plot line with video and short summaries, giving users a very real sense of the intensity of the movie and the struggle Glass endured.
While the site is very well designed and does get viewers excited to see the movie, it also may give too much away. Users will follow DiCaprio on his 200 mile journey to survive, and potentially feel like they’ve seen the whole movie by the end of their experience with the site. But aside from the chance of spoiling the movie, the site does a great job of displaying the stunning cinematography and intensity of the movie – something that will draw more viewers into theaters. And I think it is something that fans who have already seen the movie will be excited to share on social media to show their praise.
