Nordstrom has become the first brand to add the forum-focused Reddit arena to their social media repertoire. With Instagram, Facebook and Twitter being over-saturated with brands and strategies, joining Reddit seemed like an ideal opportunity for Nordstrom to “respond to and speak with our customers directly in real-time in a way our customers will enjoy,” according to Dan Evans, Jr., a Seattle Nordstrom spokesperson.

With the username Nordstrom1901 (referring to the year Nordstrom opened) and moderated by their internal social media team, the current content includes a clever introductory post, as well as “ask me anything” questions (AMAs) which are led by a buyer at Nordstrom who sparks the discussion thread by introducing themselves and their Nordstrom career path, then offering to answer questions from Reddit users. “The AMA’s enable us to have an authentic, one-on-one dialog with customers on specific topics they expressed interest in – like men’s fashion,” says Evans. It allows for Nordstrom to communicate directly with users, thus growing their relationships and loyalty.

According to Luxury Daily, strategically utilizing Reddit in this way “allows a continual conversation, unlike pre-planned Twitter conversations.” As one of the first major brands to dip their toes into the waters of the popular forum-based platform, Nordstrom’s innovative digital approach potentially could give them the leg up on their competitors within the digital space.  Learn more about their unique social strategy or join the discussion yourself.
