While there are some apps, like FreshDirect, that allow consumers to do all of their packaged goods and food shopping from home. The vast majority of consumers still visit their local convenient or grocery store to cross-off the weeks shopping list. Knowing this fact has pushed some marketers to use new in-store tech-advances to change the way consumers shop and buy in brick-and-mortar.

Some of the most interesting advances are listed below.

Radio-Frequency Identification (RFID): These wireless chips are about the size of a grain of rice and can be inserted into packaging and clothing. When consumers walk by or pick-up the item the RFIDs can activate a video or audio recording about the product, on a nearby screen or speaker.

U-Scan: This system allows consumers to scan their own items with a handheld devise while shopping. Once they arrive at the register they hand over the device for a faster check-out time.

iBeacon: This Apple innovation uses geo-fencing to send consumers coupons, sales information and ads about products directly to their phones while shopping in-store.

Smart Carts: Chaotic Moon Labs created a cart that will follow you throughout the store and also scan your items as you shop. These are being tested in select Whole Food currently!
