Thanks to a new partnership between spirits giant, Campari America, and tech leader, Thin Film Electronics, ordering your next cocktail will be as easy as tapping your phone to a magnet.
Using Thinfilm’s “NFC SpeedTap” tags and cloud platform, Campari America (SKYY, Wild Turkey, American Honey) fans can simply touch their smartphones to a tech-enabled fridge magnet. This will bring up a screen for purchasing Campari’s products through Drizly, a spirits ordering service similar to Uber. The technology works thanks to a development of connectivity called near field communication (NFC) that allows two devices to connect with one another when they are brought into close range, say a few centimeters.
For consumers, this new partnership doesn’t just mean faster on-demand booze ordering. It can equate to faster lines in subways, trains, grocery stores, and retailers. And for advertisers, it opens up a world of possibilities. Companies like Nokia are already using the technology in public locations to show consumers content like movie trailers, clothing color options, and directions. NFC is even being used in tombstones so visitors can learn more about lost loved ones. NFC isn’t very new, but as marketers harness the technology, the applications will feel innovative and seamless.
