AT&T takes the leadership role in mobile technology trends by determining the environmental impact of their smartphones from the point of development and manufacturing to the end-of-life and disposal. Working with the Business for Social Responsibility, AT&T will develop an Eco-Rating system to see how their smartphones measure up in the “green” department, and will note the ratings on their packaging later this year. AT&T has posted a YouTube video to bring awareness to the initiative. AT&T’s step toward environmental responsibility and sustainability could be an important factor for consumers’ decision-making. According to Mashable, a study by Deloitte states, “54 percent of more than 6,000 people surveyed ‘consider sustainability to be one of their decision-making factors in product and store selection.'” With such a competitive mobile market and with smartphones on the rise, it’s important for carriers to consider the many aspects of the purchase decision. AT&T may have recognized an important upcoming mobile technology strategy by moving toward sustainability. But will users actually consider switching carriers or their device to go green when there’s many other features to consider? To learn more about AT&T’s program, visit Mashable.
